about

Silent Decay was recorded between 1992 - 1993 at my home studio in Northern California and released thru various cassette labels in 1993. This release starts my transition away from tape to digital. The beginnings of computer based music production without much use of tape. Many of these tracks had the synthesizers recorded in the computer. The guitar tracks were still recorded onto tape. These were then mixed together for the final result.

Much of this was very new technology. For me, I was also grappling with the sequencer and how to use it without making the music sound too sterile. I’m not sure how successful I was with these tunes... it definitely got better as time wore on but it was a learning process for sure. Of course playing these tunes with other musicians would of been ideal but for that time I was so busy going to college and working part time. I did not have enough free time to make a live musical act successful. So my music making was relegated to the evenings when I was free from school and work.

A big benefit of working in the computer was the palette of sounds became much more broad and diverse. That alone made it worth it to learn this new technology. In 1992 going digital was still kinda experimental. Although it looked like this was where music production was going... it was not a done deal. I remember many conversations with music people about how bad recording digitally was for the overall sound.

Much of these tracks were done using Master Tracks Pro and then Studio Vision by Opcode. Both companies are no longer around but they were amazing for the time and really cemented my musical path for many years to come.
