about

This release was recorded between 1988 - 1989 at various locations throughout the Los Angeles area and released thru several cassette labels in 1989. These recording were all done live, no overdubs. This group was a live, breathing, gigging band based in Los Angeles. Over the couple years the band was together we became a solid 3 piece power trio. We played a bunch of gigs in the LA area in the late 1980’s and even came up to play a gig in San Francisco at the Chi-Chi club. It would of been interesting to see and hear what we could of done with a few more years under our belt, but it was not meant to be. As they say, All Things Must Pass...

After the group disintegrated I ended up moving back to Northern California and went back to college. I quickly got knee deep into music production classes and recording with sequencers and computers. The digital age was arriving..... For me though, nothing really beats a live group of talented musicians and both Kirk Famularo on Bass and Tom Wenzel on Drums fit the bill. I never seemed to be at a loss of what to play when playing music with both Kirk and Tom. It was a fun band to be part of.

It was also a time with minimal life commitments and really every second of my free time was devoted to this group and writing music that these guys would not find boring. Some of these songs carried over to other groups later on but these songs were really the beginnings of my musical writing for more guitar based or guitar centric music.

Having come from a Pop band, Voysis, that had a vocalist and then to a Jazz Fusion group, The Dancing Masons, this group, The Outer Darkness, was very different. We had a edge to our playing and to the overall sound. I called the group ‘The Outer Darkness’ for a reason, I wanted to get outside, I wanted to go beyond what we were hearing from our favorite musicians. And all of us definitely wanted to go beyond what was on the radio. Some of the songs were constructed so there was room to stretch out and improvise. This space was our way to The Outer Darkness, our way to get out there. This musically was very enjoyable with Kirk and Tom, especially when everything was clicking. Some nights were musically amazing. Thankfully, I believe we caught some of that in these recordings.

I hope you enjoy the music.
