about

Opening Remarks was recorded between 1989 - 1990 and released thru various cassette labels in 1991. In listening to these recordings over 3 decades later many memories flood my mind. Music that resonates has the ability to bring one back to specific time, to a particular place. For me, I always associate my own music to where it was composed. Back in those days I was living in Los Angeles, so the Opening Remarks songs definitely remind me of Southern California and my time there. Los Angeles is an interesting place, very unique. I had some good times in LA and some not so good. Back then, one thing was for sure, I was laser focused on music. Gigging with multiple bands in the evening and giving guitar lessons during the day. My life was music, music, music.

For me, these songs highlight my beginning growth as a songwriter, melody writer and producer.... all of which were very rudimentary and basic at the time. In terms of recording, these were all recorded on a Tascam Porta One 4 Track cassette recorder. It was a DIY project where I was the composer, performer and recording engineer. My recording and mixing chops were pretty much non-existent back then.... but with each cassette release my overall sound improved. This release is really the beginning steps of that journey that I am still taking to this day.

When listening to these songs there are many, many things I would like to change, take out, erase, start over, re-record, EQ, re-mix... but..... this is where I was at in 1991. We can only do what we can do and this is my sonic snapshot from 1991. There are some songs I really like in this collection. Persistent Discrepancy became a song I would perform live with various bands over the years. I have recorded this song 3 different times. This recording is the second version. I do have a new release coming out in the near future that contains the newer, much better (in my view) sounding version of Persistent. That version is in a video on my youtube channel. At some point I would like to re-record Daily Double, Isolation and Tripwire.... maybe Opening Remarks... but these things take time for me to re-create and make better... hopefully one day... There are some tunes that I thought came out pretty darn good from a music and production standpoint... and those are; Moksha and Midnight. I remember borrowing a friends keyboard and drum machine for awhile, maybe a month.... Midnight was the result. And Moksha just happened... very quick, not much thought. It’s nice when that happens. It does not happen a lot but enough to know that it could happen again.
