Persistent Discrepancy

This is another older tune composed on my Tascam Porta-One 4 track cassette recorder. Persistent definitely has some progressive rock influences with the 5/4 solo section. This is another tune that uses the 2 hand tapping technique. The beginning riff is definitely 2 hand... but the melody and solo are using the regular guitar technique with a pick.

I like how the melody turned out once it was harmonized. It was a decent melody without the harmonized line but once the melody was harmonized it brought the song into another area and for me, gave the music more weight.

When I was writing this tune I was listening a lot to the group UK with Eddie Jobson on keyboards. The solo section rhythm came out of that influence. The solo section is a tad tricky for both the rhythm part and the solo. The time signature is in 5 and the guitar rhythm section is all 2 hand, which gives the section a different kind of momentum. The chords in the solo section change keys so taking a solo in this song adds a heightened sense of tonality.

I was listening to a lot of early Miles Davis at the time of recording the solo. And one thing he did back in the day was these really cool trills on his trumpet. He would start a solo that way or use it as a way to add tension. So my solo starts with that trill technique. I found it a great way to lead into a solo.
