This is composition is hugely influenced by John Mclaughlin and The Mahavishnu Orchestra. The first several albums Mclaughlin did with that group was and still is amazing. I’ve really never heard any group come close to what they achieved musically. Powerful, emotional, aggressive and everyone in the group was a stellar musician.

With Menagerie I tried to borrow some of those Mahavishnu elements, not sure how successful that was, but it did give the song a different sound that stood out apart from my other tunes.

I did perform this piece with one group, The Dancing Masons. It was always fun to play and I believe the strength of the song came across in our performances. The Dancing Masons consisted of Piano, Violin, Bass, Drums and Guitar... because we had more musicians in the group it allowed me to write more individual parts for each section. That opened up some interesting possibilities that I use to this day. Layering and having parts that interconnect with other parts is something I really like to incorporate into my music.
