I composed Detour when I started branching out into instrumental bands. For years I played in Pop groups or Rock bands with vocalists. After tiring of that kind of music and being told what to think, which is essentially what a vocalist does, I started writing instrumental music. It really enhanced my music compositional skills because now I had to come up with a melody and fill the void that the vocalist left. The beginning riff is in 9 and is fun and challenging to play. The rest of the tune really comes out of that riff. The melody plays on top of the riff in 9.

I have performed this song with several bands throughout the years. I did record the song with a group I was in called HyNGE but we took out the metal influenced ending of the song. Not sure why we did, but it was group decision. My feeling was the end section was not included in the HyNGE recording as it had too much of a metal edge to it. Over the years I realized that was a bad decision because the end section was really a chance for everyone in the group to cut loose.

This song was always a tune I wanted to re-record. Bringing Mason Davis into the mix was a blessing as he could play the end section with no problems and was all in. He did a great job on this song and really added a nice new dimension and depth to the song.
