Angular Momentum

Angular Momentum came to be as I was practicing the 2 hand tapping technique. I discovered ways to create chord moves that would be very to hard to achieve with one hand. The beginning intro and outro uses this idea of extending chordal shapes on the guitar with 2 hands.

When this song was played live I always like to extend the solo section as there was a lot of room to stretch out. And depending on the night and how well everyone was playing there were times this section was electric. At times the solo section got pretty crazy and other times it was very traditional. It really depended on the players and the evening. In this recording I tried to strike a balance between the crazy and tradition.

One of my groups back in the day was called the Outer Darkness. The reason for the name was we were very interested in stretching the boundaries of improvisation. Not in an experimental avant-garde way... but more of an approach that a jazz musician would take. We wanted to do that with a Marshall amp and distorted guitars... music with an edge.

In Los Angeles at the time there was a push for a smooth jazz sound with perfect playing, where every note fit and made everyone happy. For me, it was and still is hard to listen to that kind of music. The Outer Darkness wanted to go beyond all that. Within our music we created structures that had areas for expanded musical exploration.
