about

This music was composed in November of 1996 utilizing two soundfile processing software programs, Soundhack and Lemur. The piece was generated from the original text written and read by Chris Mann. After processing some preliminary sounds, what became extremely interesting was the higher frequencies that were produced through spectral extraction. The resultant sounds lost their obvious vocal associations and seemed to take on a new life of their own. Many gestures became very quick in duration and by extracting only certain frequencies from the text, new rhythms and dynamics also became apparent.
In composing this piece, I began to look at the original text as the entire universe. A vast wealth of sonic space that had many possiblities and a multitude of directions in which to focus. I associated the ground of Earth with the lowest frequencies while the far reaches of space took on the upper frequencies. The name Radio Sky comes from my selection of only upper frequency material. This piece is included on the double CD "The Frog Peak Collaborations Project."
